British actor Rik Mayall has died today (June 9) at age 56, TMZ reports. Strangely, the actor -- best known for his role as the titular character in the 1991 comedy film 'Drop Dead Fred' -- apparently died suddenly and mysteriously.

According to TMZ, a rep for Mayall has revealed that the actor was at his London home with his family when he died this morning. However, his family is left devastated and confused by the comedian's untimely death, as he wasn't sick and no foul play is suspected.

According to ABC News, Mayall was in a coma and on life support in 1998 after being involved in an ATV accident, though he later seemed to have made a full recovery.

In addition to his role in 'Drop Dead Fred,' Mayall was well known in England for writing and starring in the '80s sitcom 'The Young Ones' and later had starring roles in other U.K. shows like 'The New Statesman' and 'Backadder.'

R.I.P., Rik Mayall. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
