As PopCrush previously reported, Selena Gomez recently hit number one with her new album Revival. It's the actress-singer's second chart-topping album in a row, following her previous effort Stars Dance in 2013.

This string of number one hits has now earned Gomez special praise—praise that can only bolster the upward trajectory of her career: She'll be the recipient of the Chart Topper award at Billboard's annual Women in Music event, which Billboard announced this morning. The event will take place on December 11 in New York City.

The Chart Topper award "recognizes major career milestones on [their] charts," according to the site's official announcement. Selena Gomez will be succeeding last year's recipient, Iggy Azalea.

Janice Min, co-president and chief creative officer of Guggenheim Media's Entertainment Group (Billboard is one of the major media outlets in the group's portfolio), spoke on behalf of Billboard to explain their decision behind choosing Gomez as this year's Chart Top recipient. "In the last few months, Selena has broken onto the scene as an adult, and come into her own as an artist with the success of Revival," a statement that proves that Gomez' "revival" was every bit as much of a self-actualization.

The remainder of Min's statement further emphasizes this noticeable sense of personal growth on Gomez's behalf, stating that "We want to highlight this moment for a woman who has become a role model for many, a feminist, an independent voice whose new album truly showcases her as a mature artist."

What's certain is that Selena's chart performance influenced Billboard's decision to honor her with this particular award. Billboard notes that this single is the singer's fastest-ever platinum seller, and highest charting one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number 5. The single also spent three consecutive weeks at number 1 on Top 40 radio —no easy feat, considering how competitive pop is these days.

More information about the award show is forthcoming, though Billboard has announced that Lady Gaga will be honored as its 2015 Woman of the Year "for her industry leadership, artistry, philanthropy, innovative contribution to music and inspiration to millions."
