Selena Gomez landed one of the covers for Wonderland Magazine's upcoming 10th anniversary issue. Inside, she opened up about the role that her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, played in the creation of her new album.

According to MTV, Selena says she made the conscious decision to take full control of her image after the way the media reacted to her highly publicized split from the "Baby" singer.“It was very violating and I think [my album] was such an outlet for me to talk about how I see things," she said.

She continued, saying it was difficult to make her own choices, because she'd never really had total autonomy over her career: “Honestly, it’s the first time somebody said: ‘So what do you want to do?’ and I literally had no idea what I wanted to do because I didn’t have anyone to fall back on. I wasn’t asking Disney, I wasn’t asking anyone. It was going to be solely me. And at this point there had been so many people talking about my life.”

Selena said creating her upcoming album Revival was cathartic for her, and her newfound creative control allowed her to take the songwriting to a deeply personal level. She said, “I wanted the opportunity to figure out what I’m going to say and how I’m going to say it so people can understand me. It took about a year in total to figure it out.”

She also talked about the album’s title: "Obviously it is exciting and beautiful and I can’t wait. It is going to be my revival — that’s why I’ve titled it Revival. I had to realize that the real world was exactly where I need to be, or else I’m going to lose my mind.”

You can listen to the very personal Revival when it drops on October 9.
