Selena Gomez Candidly Opens Up About Justin Bieber Relationship [VIDEO]
Selena Gomez just released the most heartfelt, confessional song and video of her career with ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants,’ which offers a devastatingly powerful look into her on-and-off again relationship with Justin Bieber. After dropping the emotional music video this morning (Nov. 6), Selena stopped by ‘On Air With Ryan Seacrest‘ to talk about the tune, her relationship with Justin (including his thoughts on the video) and finding her own identity.
The video starts out with a heart-wrenching monologue by Selena, who tearfully attempts to tease apart her feelings about her relationship with Justin: “You make me feel crazy,” she admits in the video, crying. “You make me feel like it was my fault. I was in pain.”
“They taped the mic underneath the table when I was shooting the video,” Selena explained to Ryan Seacrest. “And I had shot the video over a year ago. So, in that state — where I was in that place emotionally — I went in and I went into the room by myself, and I looked at the actual mirror in the music video, and I had a conversation [with] myself to every question I had in my mind in that moment: ‘Wow, this feeling changes everything and you can’t help it.'”
It was a tough year for Selena, who not only went through major ups-and-downs in her relationship with Justin, but had to endure the intense ‘Jelena’ scrutiny from both fans and critics. She told the radio host that it was a struggle for her to find her own self in the midst of all of the insanity.
“I think the biggest problem I had this year, even with [Justin] and on his side, is identity,” Selena revealed. “I was trying to figure out what I’m doing, and that was the first time I was constantly being kicked down for doing that. When I didn’t know, I just wanted to say, ‘This is what I want.’ This is where I am in my professional life. Things changed in my personal life, things changed in my heart — everything.”
“And yeah, I made some decisions that weren’t great as well, and so did he and that’s why we went through all that to only make us better,” she continued. “And he has heard [‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’] and he has seen the video, and it’s something that I feel like girls need hear, and it’s something I’m willing to share with people.”
As for Justin’s own take on the track, Selena said:
“He thought it was beautiful. And it was really hard at first,” she admitted. While he didn’t cry like Ryan Seacrest’s co-host did, Selena admitted that he had a hard time with a different aspect: “He was a little jealous of the video guy at first,” she laughed. “Honestly, music is an expression, and for me, if you will, l be that voice for these girls, there are some people that feel this. This is universal.”
When the ‘American Idol’ host dug a little deeper and asked Selena outright what her relationship with Justin is like now, Gomez smiled and replied:
“I support him. I think I always will. I’m upset when he’s upset, I’m happy when he’s happy,” she revealed, nodding yes when Ryan asked if they were close. “I don’t want anything [bad] ever happen to him. It hurts me. But that’s all.”
So, what’s next for Selena after falling in love so young? “I don’t know,” she joked. “eHarmony’s next for goodness sake!”
