What would you say if you had the chance to woo Selena Gomez? Would you call her beautiful? Tell her how much you love her new album? Maybe say “Sorry”?
Or would you just lay a pick-up line of epic proportions on the pretty pop princess?
The latter is the scenario Gomez encountered while appearing on BBC Radio 1 in March, when radio host Cel Spellman decided to play an on-air pick-up line game with his famous guest.
“One thing about you, Selena, is I think it’s safe to say that you’re one of the most sought-after women in the world,” the host explained. “So I thought I’d give the Radio 1 listeners a chance to kind of give their best shot at wooing Selena Gomez with all but one line.”
While Gomez appeared somewhat uncomfortable at first (and who could blame her?) all reluctance seemed to melt away once she heard the first caller’s “impressive” pick-up. Max, only twelve years old, floored Gomez with this cheeky and adorable line: “Hi Selena, it’s Max… Is your name Google? Because you’ve got everything I’m searching for.”
And boy, was Gomez impressed: Screaming, laughing hysterically, looking over her shoulder to her friends, running her hands through her hair to compose herself, and even covering her face in embarrassment, the “Hands to Myself” singer completely lost it.
“Oh my goodness! Wow! Impressive. That got my attention,” Gomez gushed once she found her composure, before adding, “The turning eighteen part may need to be a crucial part of me pursuing, but I’m very impressed. Wow Max, thank you.”
When Spellman added that Gomez looked as if she might be blushing, she confirmed, “I think I got flustered.”
Other pick-up lines callers tried on the pop star: “I heard you’re good at algebra, could you replace my x without asking y?” and “Do you know what my shirt’s made of? Boyfriend material.”
As for any British boy’s prospects of charming the former Disney darling, hope is certainly not lost. When asked if she’d ever date an English guy, she responded enthusiastically. “Oh gosh, of course! Absolutely, absolutely. Love, love the accent.”
