Selena Gomez is trying out a more serious big screen role with her latest film 'Rudderless,' a musical drama about a father coping with the murder of his son.

In the first trailer for William H. Macy's directorial debut, the 22-year-old pop star is seen sobbing to Billy Crudup over an unexpected tragedy that flips their worlds upside down. Selena plays the grieving Kate, a girl who once dated Josh, son of successful business exec Sam (portrayed by Crudup). The movie follows the devastation left in the wake of a university shooting that stole Josh's life, and how Sam copes with the loss by turning to his son's personally penned music.

Though the glimpses of Selena in the trailer are brief, it looks as though the 'Spring Breakers' actress does well in a dramatic role. Her tearful scene got us a little emotional, at least!

'Rudderless' also stars Anton Yelchin, Laurence Fishburne, Jamie Chung and Felicity Huffman. Check out Selena and the rest of the cast when 'Rudderless' hits theaters on Oct. 17.
