Shailene Woodley has starred in huge blockbusters like ‘Divergent’ and ‘The Fault in Our Stars,’ so why is the successful young actress homeless?

Well, by choice, apparently. And her reasoning doesn’t sound that crazy when she explains it. Last night (May 15), she sat down with Jimmy Kimmel who prefaced the conversation with, “You’re a very interesting person,” before asking if it’s true that Shailene can fit all of her possessions into a single suitcase.

“Almost everything,” she shared. “I have some kitchen items that my grandmother is using. But other than that, yeah, everything that I own and use is in a carry-on suitcase. I figure if I only own a few things and it gets lost, then I would have nothing.”

The late-night talk show host was impressed by her minimalistic living, but the ‘Divergent’ star makes it seem easy.

“I was only home for 15 days last year,” she explained, “and I got home and I was like, ‘I don’t want to be alone. I want to be with my friends and my family.'…So I got rid of everything just so that I could have one suitcase that would be easy to transport between houses and just kind of couch surf for a few months.”

Selling us even more on the idea, she added, “But it’s so refreshing and it takes so much stress away when you’re like, ‘Ugh, I only have one pair of jeans to wash,’ you know? It’s so nice.”

Shailene also shared with Jimmy that she used to have a home in Los Angeles, but she gave it to her grandmother. And now the uprooted actress is living “literally on friends’ couches.”

“I was only here in L.A. for two months,” she said, “so when you’re home you kind of want to soak up faces and places, like familiarity, and feel comfortable. And then I leave again.”

Tugging along her single carry-on suitcase, too, of course!
