Aw, this is sad news. Simon Cowell called off his engagement to Mezghan Hussainy.

The notoriously callous 'X Factor' and former 'American Idol' judge announced the break on Sunday to U.K. newspaper The Mirror.

Cowell revealed that he and Hussainy are "on a break" and that they hadn't seen each other since Christmas time (and that even then, they only met up briefly). “It’s quite a complicated relationship," Cowell told the paper. "We have had a break from each other, and we are still incredibly close. I’m vulnerable. It’s not on, it’s not off, it’s somewhere in the middle," he expounded. "I don’t know if I will ever get married, but I am happy.”

It sure sounds complicated to us! Cowell had previously gushed to Piers Morgan about his love for Hussainy, calling her "the one" -- a move that humanized the famously cold 'Britain's Got Talent' panelist. Now, Cowell regrets the openness, admitting, "I have been pretty good about not talking about my private stuff, but I got caught up in the moment.”

The pair met on the 'American Idol' set in 2003 and reportedly began dating in 2009 (the Susan Boyle era). They were engaged by February 2010, but by September 2011, rumors of strife swirled around the couple.

Hussainy has moved out of Cowell's Los Angeles mansion and into another home nearby that Cowell's pals have dubbed the “girlfriends’ graveyard.” Why? Well, it was also once occupied by another Cowell castoff, Terri Seymour.

Don't feel too sorry for the beautiful Hussainy, however. While she may be bummed, she sure isn't broke. Cowell revealed that he supports some of his exes financially. “I don’t pay them off," he clarified, "but if you have been with someone long enough, there is a responsibility. You can’t say one minute you can live this type of life and then the light goes off.”

However, in case any of our lovely female readers had plans on swooping in for a profitable rebound, be warned: the ladies' man made sure to announce that he doesn't do that for everyone. “I wouldn’t do it for every girl I have dated," Cowell said, "because I would be broke.”
