Skrillex swept both dance awards at the 2012 Grammy Awards, winning Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album in succession for ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.’ The wins followed his earlier victory for Best Remixed Recording, giving him three awards in just over an hour.

When the DJ, born Sonny Moore, took the stage to accept his trophy for Best Dance Recording, he gave thanks to award presenters OK Go, pointing out how that band’s viral success with online music videos help open doors for artists like himself to rise to fame via the Internet, without the backing of a powerful record label.

Skrillex was especially surprised to win Best Dance Recording because ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ is not exactly radio-friendly. “I’m super-proud of this song. It was like the least commercial thing I ever thought I could create, and now we got a Grammy,” he said during his acceptance speech. “It’s over four and a half minutes, there’s no verse-chorus, verse-chorus, but people connected with it.”

Just seconds later, Skrillex beat out David Guetta, Robyn and others to win Best Dance/Electronica Album. “Man, I can’t take this anymore. This is the most surreal day of my life,” he exclaimed. “I don’t feel like I really deserve this. This is really crazy.”
