When The Washington Post reported on Monday night (May 15) that President Donald Trump had "revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in a White House meeting last week," all sorts of alarms went off -- and not just in national security circles. Late-night hosts knew they had received another comedy gift from the president who can't stop, won't stop giving.

Stephen Colbert has taken a particularly adversarial stance toward the 45th president, and he didn't hesitate to dig right in at this latest stunning development:

I've got good news, and I've got bad news. The bad news: 'The Washington Post' reports that Donald Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador. Okay? The good news: Trump found the leaker!

For security reasons, the Post article couldn't get into much detail, saying what was revealed was "'code-word information,' [according to] a U.S. official familiar with the matter, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by American spy agencies."

That led Colbert to cite some possible examples: "The package has been delivered. The squirrel is in the basket. The idiot is in the Oval," he joked. "It could mean anything!"

The news broke so late on Wednesday that Colbert and his fellow late-nighters couldn't really prepare much material on it, but rest assured they'll be devoting serious time to it Tuesday night.
