Fifty Shades of Grey

Based on author E.L. James’ trilogy of romance novels of the same, Fifty Shades of Grey was transformed for the big screen just in time for Valentine’s Day 2015. Both the novels and inaugural film have experienced a viral-like success, piquing the curiosity of readers, moviegoers and even the critics who have derided the series. The Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed film follows the story of James’ young and naïve protagonist Anastasia Steele -- who is portrayed by newcomer Dakota Johnson -- and her torrid love affair with the debonair, mysterious and troubled billionaire Christian Grey, played by Irish actor Jamie Dornan. Following the staggering success of James’ series -- which originated as Twilight fan fiction -- the first Fifty Shades of Grey film was met by eager moviegoers, becoming the fourth highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time upon its release in theaters. A sequel -- which will follow the plot of the second novel in the series, Fifty Shades Darker -- is expected in 2016.
