Read MoreThe national uproar over the Feb. 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin has been dominating the headlines on news channels and social media for several weeks. The 17-year-old teen was shot and killed by neighborhood watch patroller George Zimmerman in the gated community of Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman told a 911 dispatcher that Martin, who was carrying an iced tea drink and a pack of Skittles, looked suspicious and began to follow him against explicit instructions by the dispatcher not to do so. Minutes later, Martin was killed by Zimmerman who claims it was in self-defense. As of yet, Zimmerman has not been charge with any crime.
Celebrities like Cher, Questlove of the Roots, Spike Lee, John Legend, Gabrielle Union, Big Boi, Oprah Winfrey and Janelle Monae have voiced their outrage on Twitter. They also have thrown their support behind an online petition at Change.org to have Zimmerman prosecuted for killing the young man. So far, over 800,000 people have signed the petition. Meanwhile, Wyclef Jean and other public figures held a vigil in New York Wednesday night (March 21) dubbed "1 Million Hoodie March" in honored of the slain teen Trayvon Martin.
A resolution may be on the horizon, as the New York Times reports that the Department of Justice has opened an inquiry into the shooting.
We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to Trayvon Martin's family.
