Taylor Swift Accused of Ripping Off Lyrics for ‘All Too Well’

Taylor Swift is facing accusations that she stole a lyric on her new song ‘All Too Well’ from a song by Matt Nathanson. ONTD points out that the lyric matches, almost word-for-word, a line from Nathanson’s 2003 track ‘I Saw,’ and fans have noted the similarity on Twitter.

In ‘All Too Well,’ a song from her ‘Red’ album, Swift sings, “And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to.” Compare that with the line in ‘I Saw,’ when Nathanson sings, “And I’ll forget about you long enough to forget why I need to.” That’s almost an exact match!

Nathanson, best known for his 2008 platinum single ‘Come On Get Higher,’ sent out a since-deleted tweet last week (see it via Google cache) in which he directly accused Swift of plagiarism. He wrote, “she’s definitely a fan… and now she’s a thief.”

Though Nathanson deleted the tweet, he took another dig at Swift when he re-tweeted a post from songwriter Richard Marx, who wrote, “It would be awesome if Taylor Swift’s next album contained a song called, ‘Oh, s—. Maybe it’s ME.'”

Did Taylor really steal a lyric from another songwriter? It’s hard to ignore the fact that those 13 words are almost exactly the same. But we question whether Swift would risk ruining her reputation by intentionally stealing someone else’s words. Maybe she heard his song years ago and the phrase got stuck in her head, but she forgot where it came from. Or it could just be coincidence. We’ll have to wait for Swift’s side of the story on this one.
