Tegan and Sara Charm L.A.’s Teragram Ballroom (Photos)

After a year and a half away from the stage and the airwaves, Tegan and Sara are back.

Supporting their forthcoming record, Love You To Death, with a trio of shows in Los Angeles and New York, the Canadian duo hit the stage at LA’s Teragram Ballroom to treat a sold­-out crowd to a teaser of what's to come alongside the duo’s past hits.

Despite their crossover into Top 40, Tegan and Sara still maintain the indie rock ethos of their roots by keeping the show down to earth (but nevertheless entertaining). With their backing band bathed in shadows, the twins stood front and center performing and indulging in funny banter between songs from across their catalog. There were jokes about encountering skunks since Sara's move to LA and the ever-present smell of weed, bachelor parties and bottle service in Vegas, and even a faux pole dance around the mic stand thanks to Tegan.

Oldie “Nineteen” elicited the most devout response, while “Walking With a Ghost” from 2004's So Jealous also garnered an enthusiastic reaction with many fans singing along with every word. The sisters ripped into a energetic rendition of “Closer” to end their set, returning to the stage with an acoustic guitar for the encore. They spoke of being humbled to revisit to how they started out. The twins also admitted that they burned out on playing music for awhile, having gotten their professional start at 17, and said turning to pop gave them a new lease on their musical life. Producer Greg Kurstin, key to their change in sound, stood amongst the audience and got a special shout out.

Dedicating their final song to their close friends in the audience, the pair brought the 90-minute show to an end with “Where Does the Good Go" from So Jealous. They waved goodbye, but it won’t be bye for long: Following a string of international dates, they've got a full North American tour coming up in the fall.
