‘The Simpsons’ Episode from 2013 Pays Tribute to Both Alan Rickman and David Bowie

A 2013 Valentine’s Day-themed episode of The Simpsons has resurfaced online after fans discovered a serendipitous link between its content and the recent passing of two beloved British icons: musician David Bowie and actor Alan Rickman.

The episode, which contains a Love Actually parody called Love Indubitably (along with a spot-on Hugh Grant-type character), features both an appearance from Severus Snape (famously portrayed in the Harry Potter series by Rickman and here voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) as well as a soundtrack provided courtesy of Bowie’s 1974 track “All the Young Dudes.”

In the clip, the Grant-like Prime Minister characters professes his love for his “cheeky” secretary, Eliza Commonbottom, reflecting the story-line from the 2003 rom-com. Afterwards, a plethora of very British things happen involving Union Jack flags and a Doctor Who police box. In the midst of madness, Snape comes in to declare, “Love is more powerful than all my magic,” while Bowie’s song plays in the background.

The episode, titled “Love is a Many-Splintered Thing,” originally aired on February 10, 2013 (just under three years ago), so while the inclusion of both Rickman and Bowie references are certainly accidental, they are no less peculiarly relevant to unfortunate recent events.

However, this episode of The Simpsons isn’t the only one with a real-world coincidental counterpart. In fact, many episodes of the hit animated comedy show have “predicted future events,” including eerie references to video calls, smartwatches, NSA surveillance, and electronic voting booth malfunctions, among other things.
