Forget the founding of the Federalist Party: Alexander Hamilton's most impressive distinction came earlier today (May 3) when Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway play inspired by Hamilton earned a record-setting number of Tony Award nominations.

Hamilton, which opened at The Public Theater in February 2015, has been nominated across every type of category — acting, writing, directing and design — and is the frontrunner for the Best Musical category. It's already helped to land Miranda a Pulitzer Prize, a MacArthur Foundation genius grant and a Grammy. Its popularity over the last year is even expected to strengthen viewership of The Tonys, which was down to 6.3 million viewers last year from 7 million in 2014, Variety reported.

Bright Star, School of Rock: The Musical, Shuffle Along and Waitress are also up for Best Musical, while The Humans; King Charles III; The Father and Eclipsed, which stars Lupita Nyong'o, will duke it out for Best Play.

Waitress, which earned four nominations, also signals the first nod for Sara Bareilles, who wrote the show's musics and lyrics.

"I won't forget this moment of just being here, in my relatively new home of New York, sipping my coffee," she told The Hollywood Reporter after getting the news. "This whole journey has been remarkable and life-changing...Theater is so deeply collaborative, and it feels extra sweet to be acknowledged because we're all sharing this moment together."

The 70th Tony Awards will broadcast from the Beacon Theater on June 12. James Corden will host.
