'X Factor' hopeful Chris Rene is known for his soulful and smooth blend of R&B and hip-hop during his performances, but he admitted on tonight's episode that his mom gave him a guitar when he was 12. After he made that revelation, we weren't worried when he took the stage for the show's Rock Week.

Tonight, Rene got a rock 'n' roll makeover with his spiky hair and shades. The crooner gave Bob Marley's reggae jam 'No Woman, No Cry' a potent Chris Rene makeover. He turned the island-influenced song into a smooth, R&B-flecked jam.

We all know that Rene battles his demons (having been an addict), but he's proving that everything is going to be alright if he sticks to the straight and narrow and focuses on his music. His performance was terrific.

However, the judges forced, scripted banter rose the surface. Nicole Scherzinger struggled to try and criticize the performance while others questioned why L.A. Reid chose a reggae song, as opposed to a rock song for him. It was like the judges were trying to find fault with Rene's performance because it makes for good drama and ratings. It's tiresome and wastes too much time. Producers, cut back on the judge jabber jawing, stat! Thanks!
