In May 2016, after surviving Days of Future Past's relentless barrage of Sentinel attacks, Professor X, Mystique and the X-Men's gang of mutants will face a being capable of scrubbing the earth of human and mutant-kind. But in the trailer above, Apocalypse — the world's very first mutant — won't get a clear path to the destruction he seeks.

X-Men: Apocalypse, which stars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult, finds the titular warlord waking after 1,000 years with an urge to raze every living thing to the ground and start his own world order. With the help of four loyal disciples potentially inspired by the apocalypse's Biblical horsemen, the enemy's odds of domination are pretty good. They become increasingly good when the group discovers he's capable of controlling any mutant.

"Everything they built will fall!" Apocalypse bellows in the clip. "And from the ashes of their world, we'll build a better one."

How will this one end? We'll have to wait to find out, but one thing's for sure—it's the last we'll see of Lawrence in the role of Raven Darkholme. J-Law told MTV that Apocalypse, the third in a trilogy that kicked off with First Class, will be her final film as the shapeshifter Mystique.

Check out the trailer above and hang tight for the Apocalypse premiere on May 27, 2016.
