‘Xena’ Reboot to Thrust Warrior Princess Out of The Closet
Warlords Callisto and Ares might still prove to be threats to Xena‘s titular warrior if the show returns to NBC as a reboot series, but questions of sexual identity will no longer best her.
Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who’s writing the pilot script for a potential new project, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has said that Xena and her best friend Gabrielle will explore their deep-seated romantic feelings for each other. The warriors’ relationship spawned many rumors that they were a couple during the show’s original run, which premiered in 1995, but love never came to 100% fruition. There will be no such tiptoeing around the subject in the story’s second go-around, Grillo-Marxuach insisted on Tumblr on March 6.

“There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s,” he wrote. “Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons.”
Grillo-Marxuach wrote in a separate entry in January that his goal through the new pilot is to honor the show’s existing tone — its “sword and sandal” trek through Ancient Greece — but translate it to interest a modern audience. And while he couldn’t say for sure whether any of the show’s original stars, including Lucy Lawless, will re-join, the door is open.
“Down the line, in success, if there is a way of bringing back members of the classic cast with both a legitimate narrative intention, and respect to both the extant series and the new, who am I to say no?” he wrote.
