XXXTentacion was shot and killed during an apparent robbery on Monday (June 18) in Broward County, Florida, police have confirmed. TMZ first reported the news.

According to the New York Times, the 20-year-old rapper, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was leaving a motorsports store shortly before 4 p.m. when he was approached by two armed suspects. At least one of the suspects fired a gun and struck Onfroy before fleeing in a dark-colored S.U.V. Videos taken at the scene and shared on social media showed his slumped body in the driver's seat as bystanders attempted to take his pulse.

Onfroy was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead just after 5:30 p.m. Authorities are actively looking for the shooter.

XXXTentacion, a Plantation, Florida native, first rose to fame when his 2015 single "Look at Me" went viral on SoundCloud. His debut album, 2017's 17, hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. He landed his first and only No. 1 record with sophomore album ?, released in March.

A controversial figure, XXXTentacion was awaiting trial on domestic violence charges against his pregnant girlfriend at the time of his death.

A candlelight vigil has been planned for Tuesday night (June 19) near where he was shot and killed, per the Sun Sentenial.
