Beyonce absolutely stole the show at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards — and her sort-of-surprise set was smack dab in the middle of it.

In a night filled with four Rihanna medleys, Britney Spears' big return to the VMAs stage, an Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj reunion for "Side to Side" and a few, um, less memorable performances, Bey reminded us all what it means to be, as her husband Jay Z called her at the 2014 VMAs, the greatest living entertainer.

The Lemonade singer also swept the awards, taking home Best Video of the Year for "Formation" (yes, Kanye looked validated but beyond that, she and director Melina Matsoukas deserved it), Best Female Video for "Hold Up," Breakthrough Longform Video for Lemonade, Best Choreography, Best Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Her Vanguard award included, Beyonce's officially surpassed Madonna for most MTV Video Music Awards of all time.
