Cruel Internet Prank Suggests Justin Bieber Fans Cut Themselves in Protest of Pot Photos
There are times when the Internet goes too far. After photos of Justin Bieber smoking a blunt hit the web, an Internet group 4Chan took aim at Beliebers in making #CutForBieber and #CuttingForBeiber a Twitter trending topic.
Basically, the group posted fake photos of “fans” with bloody cuts showing their support for the singer after the blunt photos surfaced; it’s a sick and cruel joke.
Images of slashed, bloodied wrists began to circulate, combined with messages pleading with the singer to cease smoking pot. Some photos were real; others were faked.
Falsified photos like this certainly create problems when there are people who really do self-harm and cut because they are in legitimate emotional pain. Luckily, they can visit the Born Brave bus if they need help.
The campaign began as a joke, but as 4Chan hoped, real Beliebers began to circulate the message.
According to Daily Dot, one 4Channer wrote: “Tweet a bunch of pics of people cutting themselves and claim we did it because bieber was smoking weed. See if we can get some little girls to cut themselves.”
#CutForBieber was even a trending topic and a worldwide hashtag on Jan. 7.
This is not the first time 4Chan users have targeted Beliebers. They got a story about The Biebs having cancer to go viral, encouraging fans to shave their heads in a show of support. Several of them did without digging to confirm facts. They also launched a campaign to get Taylor Swift to perform at a school for the deaf.
It’s all web-created fun and games until someone really gets hurt. While it does show the power of some web users, it’s also incredibly damaging.
Beliebers, please, be more careful with what Internet sources you choose to “belieb.” Shaving heads is one thing; hair grows back. But cutting is scarring and dangerous, and you can really hurt yourself.
Even Miley Cyrus weighed in on the controversy, retweeing this:
#cutforbieber? Cutting is NOT something to joke about. There are people who are actually suffering from self-harm, this is so disrespectful.
