On this Tuesday's (Nov. 15) episode of 'Glee,' Matthew Morrison's Mr. Schuester and Idina Menzel's Shelby perform an odd mashup of Lady Gaga's 'You & I' mixed with Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle's '80s "he said, she said" ballad of the same exact name. In case you are like, "Eddie and Crystal who?" -- here's a brief education on 'em. They were adult contemporary singers with great voices and they scored hits as solo artists in the '80s. They teamed up for a power, monster ballad called 'You & I.' Who knows, maybe they inspired Gaga?

Whatever the case, the music supervisors at 'Glee' know both songs and mashed 'em up like potatoes. The show has demonstrated its love of Lady Gaga in the past, and while the mashup is clever, since the songs have the same title and introduce the male voice and interplay, we don't think that Gaga's original would have worked as a back and forth lyrical dialogue, so the mashup is clever, smart and unlike anything we've ever heard.

You really can't top the epic nature of Gaga original, either.

However, both songs strung together (and not seamlessly, mind you) work. We are left to wonder why Shelby didn't swap out "my cool Nebraska guy" with "my cool Ohio guy." Just sayin'.

While this isn't a flawless mashup, we love the collision of genres and generations, and both Morrison and Menzel have a deft grip on the material and handle it well. They have such melodious voices that we were swooning in our seats. The piano doesn't feel as prominent as the Gaga song's piano power, but that didn't detract from the pretty, Broadway-vibe of this version.
