Sad news for Hilary Duff and her family.

The actress-singer and her husband, former NHL star Mike Comrie, announced their separation today (Jan. 10). The couple, who have been married since August 2010, have one child. Son Luca was born in March 2012.

"They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives," a rep for the pair tells People. "They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."

Duff, 26, and Comrie, 33, were last seen in public together on New Year's Eve. As to what caused the split, there was no one thing, a source close to Hilary tells the magazine.

"There was no major incident -- no big event between the two of them," the source says. "They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends."

As the news broke, Hilary posted a tweet thanking fans for their support:
