Joey Fatone’s new title is “Crusher and Destroyer of Dreams.” The former member of ‘N Sync took all of a minute to crush the hopes and dreams of ‘N Sync fans the world over and to throw a little shade at Backstreet Boys‘ doorstep.

He broke the hearts of ‘N Sync fans by saying that no further reunion is on the horizon beyond that 30-second tease at the 2013 MTV VMAs as part of Justin Timberlake‘s Video Vanguard award celebration.

Fatone addressed the “blink and you’ll miss it” pop music moment at the VMAs last year. He knows that the onstage reunion was majorly short and that the band got back together for like 30 seconds.

He explained why it was such a brief moment in time, telling the Huffington Post, “Justin gave us a call, ‘Hey, I am getting this award, I’d love for you guys to be there, you were a part of my career, part of my life. I’d love you guys to do it.’ I am like, ‘Cool, I can start working out, lose a little weight, I can get into it. How much time do we have?’ Two-and-a-half weeks? ‘Okay, well, let’s figure that out right now.’ I thought we were just going to sing, but we were dancing as well. We got into the room, and it was, ‘Let’s start doing the choreography.’ Like, ‘Are we really doing this right now?’

It was also short because it as an overall award for JT and there was a serious time crunch, leaving a short window for preparation.

Fatone called the experience “fun” and “interesting” and then proceeded to pounce all over fan hopes. “But I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen again. I don’t know whether or not something will ever happen again, but again you always say never say never because that happened. That was never gonna happen and all of a sudden it did happen. At this moment in time is anything gonna happen? Absolutely, 100 percent no… at this moment.”

Okay, so he did say not right now. We can still cling to a vestige of hope. Since that was never supposed to happen and did, perhaps it can happen again? Right?

Now about that shade he tossed in the direction of BSB, who were ‘N Sync’s biggest rivals, albeit on a smaller level.

“All these other groups and bands said that we will never tour again and you see New Kids on the Block tour and stuff like that,” he noted. Then he said he felt that the Backstreeters “just need the money… No offense, guys!”

Oooh, burn!
