Melissa McCarthy On Why ‘Gilmore Girls’ Reboot Will Be Sookie-Free

Most of Star Hollow’s most familiar faces will return for Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival, but the Dragonfly Inn will need a new chef.

Melissa McCarthy has confirmed to E! News that, barring a scheduling miracle, she won’t be returning as Sookie St. James, Lorelai’s high-spirited best friend and business partner. It’s not that she didn’t want to — and she’s clearly still tight with some of the cast, as evidenced by her recent dinner with GG co-star Yanic Truesdale. It’s more that the powers-that-be waited too long to ask.

“I don’t think I am,” Melissa McCarthy told E! when asked if she’d be coming back. “I didn’t actually get asked to do it. But I think they thought I was busy, and then by the time it did come up, then I actually was.”

That’s a bummer — but know that she’s not “smad” about the new project, which will tentatively consist of four 90-minute episodes.

“I’m actually thrilled that it’s happening,” says McCarthy. “I loved that show, and I think the fans for that show are super loyal and great and I will watch every single one of them.” Same!

To be fair, McCarthy’s arguably been the busiest Gilmore Girls cast member since the finale aired in 2007. In addition to starring in her Mike & Molly sitcom for six years, her breakout role in Bridesmaids jump-started a movie career that’s yielded other hits including Spy and Tammy. She’ll costar in the Ghostbusters reboot and her newest film, The Boss, was co-written and directed by her husband Ben Falcone.

Maybe it’s denial talking, but it’s possible she’ll squeeze in some sort of brief appearance in one of the installments…right? The sole upside to her absence is that it probably means Jackson won’t be there either (he was super annoying, I’M SORRY).

How do you feel about a Sookie-less Gilmore Girls revival?
