The MTV Video Music Awards are worth watching for a number of reasons: Celebrities consistently attempt to outshine each other, someone usually crashes the stage and, perhaps most importantly, the red carpet fashion tends to be next-level ridiculous.

If you don't believe us, consider this: There are few awards shows in history that would've ever allowed Lady Gaga to wear a dress made entirely out of meat. (Imagine sitting next to her during the actual show. Or behind her. Or anywhere upwind of her, really.) But at the VMAs, the crazier, the louder and the weirder your outfit the better.

With the 2015 show just a few weeks away, we figured it was the perfect time to revisit some of our favorite, more unorthodox looks that have traveled down the red carpet over the past few years.

From the tragedy that was early-oughties fashion modeled by all five members of NSYNC to Lil Kim's famous nipple pastie, allow us to transport you back to a time in pop culture history when Pink's stage name actually made sense.

And while you may be wondering why Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears' matching denim ensembles weren't included in our list, let's clear up a common misconception: They actually wore those outfits to the 2001 American Music Awards. We did, however, include a photo of Katy Perry and Riff Raff paying homage to the couples' iconic look, so worry not.

Check out the photo gallery above. Did we miss any of your favorite outfits from VMAs past? Let us know! And be sure to tune in to watch the MTV VMAs when they air on Aug. 30 at 9PM EST.
