Phillip Phillips Says ‘Home’ Is ‘Not Something I Would Write’ and ‘Too Pop’
Phillip Phillips' first single 'Home' is No. 1 on iTunes and he earned a standing "O" from the judges when he performed it on 'American Idol.' It also helped him win the Season 11 crown. But turns out Phillips isn't in love with the song, simply because he'd prefer to perform songs he wrote. So no, he's not dissing his first hit. As if.
"They kind of just threw that song out there," the newly-crowned winner told Rolling Stone. "I didn't have a lot of options. They thought it was the right fit for me. I wanted to do one of my own songs that I had written, but with the short about of time [it wasn't possible]. It's a good song, but it's not something I would write," he admitted. "I'm glad people like it. It's a good song [by] a good writer [Drew Pearson].
So, why doesn’t he love it? Well, for one thing, he feels it's a bit too "pop" for his taste, but he took care to throw major props to the songwriter for a second time. He said, "It's a little too pop for me. I don't put in any of those 'ooohs.' I'm a little more rock than that," Phillips added. "Hopefully people will enjoy what I have to put out. Some jazz-rock stuff. But, it's a good song. Good writer."
The fact that 'Home' sits atop iTunes chart is "insane" to him, but he is still ready for the world to hear Phillip Phillips' own songs!
He also referred to how he changed melodies on the songs he covered during the season, saying, "That's just how I am. I sang the melody on some songs, just to show them I could, but I wanted to get the world ready for the kind of album I wanted to put out," Phillips said. The kind of album he wants to put out? Well, it's "jazz and rock, acoustic stuff."
It's apparent that Phillip Phillips is an artist who wants to do things his way, which is to be commended! He never felt pressure to conform to any sort of pop standards via the show saying, "I knew I wasn't going to change. No one was going to make me do anything I didn't want to do. No one could make me do anything," he insisted. "They would throw their opinions out there and hopefully I would listen, but I didn't have to."
That's what makes him an artist and it's likely why he won.
Phillips also confirmed that his right kidney isn't functioning and that a stent is helping … for now.
