On Saturday night (July 12), a new episode of 'Sam & Cat' titled '#WeStealARockstar' aired on Nickelodeon, which was the next-to-last episode of the show that had been produced. When the Season 1 finale '#GettinWiggy' airs this Thursday, July 17, all signs point that it will be the show's final episode, according to TV Series Finale.

'Sam & Cat' stars Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande as two girls who find themselves in various hijinks and awkward situations after they decide to open a babysitting service. The show premiered on June 8, 2013, and has consistently been one of the network's highest rated shows.

Rumors of the show's end began in April when show star Jennette McCurdy failed to show up at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards with co-star Grande, reportedly due to a contract dispute over equal pay between her and Grande. There were also rumors that McCurdy and Grande had a falling out after McCurdy unfollowed Grande on Twitter. Grande released a statement denouncing the rumors.

Amidst the behind the scenes drama, Nickelodeon put a halt to production on the show after filming its 36th episode, claiming it was a "production hiatus." But no new episodes were commissioned, and crew members working on the show were told to move on.

With both McCurdy and Grande having been on the tween network for so long beginning with their 'iCarly' and 'Victorious' days, respectively, it wouldn't be surprising if both stars are looking to move forward in their careers with other ventures. Grande's music career is just taking off and her upcoming album 'My Everything' is one of the most anticipated releases of the summer.

UPDATE 7/13/14 4:45 P.M. ET: It has been confirmed that Thursday's episode of 'Sam & Cat' will be the series finale. In a statement to Deadline, Nickelodeon says,  “[We] will not be producing more episodes of Sam & Cat. We are very proud of the show and its very talented cast and we wish them all the best.”
