Ireland has just made history by becoming the first nation to legalize same-sex marriage through a popular vote. And celebrities from Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran to Miley Cyrus and Harry Potter mastermind JK Rowling are celebrating the step forward toward marriage equality.

With more than 60 percent of the Ireland's 3.2 million eligible voters turning up at the polls on Friday (May 22) to vote on the referendum, 62 percent of them voted to amend the country's constitution to allow two people to marry “without distinction as to their sex.”

So what does this mean? Although Ireland legalized civil partnerships for same-sex couples since 2010, this referendum will now give them and their families constitutional protection.

Sam Smith was so excited by the news that he not only posted his thoughts on Instagram but also Twitter. "So happy Ireland have passed the law to get married there. Still genuinely shocks me thou, that this is only just happening!!" the "I'm Not the Only One" crooner tweeted.

Musical sister duo Tegan and Sara are ready to cheers to the referendum's passing. "Ireland!!!! Voting #Yes was a bold and momentous step forward for you + humanity. Congratulations. xo #equality #love #lgbt #ido #champagne," the band posted on Twitter.

While the vote took place, Niall Horan made sure to remind his homeland to vote for marriage equality by posting a photo of a rainbow shamrock on Instagram. And actress Saoirse Ronan even campaigned for people to vote yes at the polls.
