Selena Gomez is notoriously close with her family, namely her mom Mandy and her stepfather Brian Teefey. However, despite their personal tightness, Sel is severing the professional ties. She has reportedly fired them from their roles as her managers.

TMZ reports that Gomez, 21, has given her mom and stepdad the boot, relieving them of any work-related duties as of last month. They had managed her for years and are said to be unhappy about her decision, but remain close with Sel regardless. We hate to be harsh, but business is business.

Rumors popped up a few days ago that Gomez was shopping for new representation since her Disney record deal expires soon. Could she be seeking some sort of image reinvention, not to mention a lucrative contract, elsewhere? Perhaps.

We doubt Sel will make a complete left turn like her former fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus did when she broke ties with the Mouse House. But the singer and actress could be in the market for some big money and she needs a seasoned vet used to dealing with Hollywood's sharks to steer her ship and further her brand. We could certainly envision Sel with a CoverGirl or a Revlon endorsement and perhaps even a fresh, network TV show. She'd need a real player wheelin' and dealin' on her behalf.

TMZ reports that Gomez has her sights set on a professional manager with deep contacts and a rich client roster of A-list talent. Sources suggested that she is in talks with Katy Perry's team.

The Selena Gomez management split sounds purely professional and had nothing to do with her mother's reported disapproval of her on-off relationship with Justin Bieber, either.
