Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show Recap: Beyonce, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars Make for an Epic Musical Touchdown

The Super Bowl saw one of its most epic and electrifying halftime shows ever tonight as Coldplay was joined by Beyonce and Bruno Mars for a celebration of 50 years of, well, epic halftime shows.

Coldplay kicked things off right with a rousing performance of “Viva La Vida,” backed by a children’s string orchestra and surrounded by a sea of screaming, jumping fans. The band followed up with their songs “Adventure of a Lifetime” and “Paradise,” to which a marching band and dancers holding colorful giant flowers entered the field.

The energy changed from sweeping to infectious as Bruno Mars, backed by Mark Ronson on the turntables, burst onto the stage to perform his contagious smash “Uptown Funk.” Looking fly in metallic grey threads and gold chains, Ronson paid homage to the hip hop greats of the 90s with his old school backup dancers.

Not long after did Queen Bey herself march out onto the turf to blast through a her latest release, “FORMATION.” Paying tribute to Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime performance by wearing a back jacket adorned with a gold criss-cross applique, Beyonce—backed by a troupe of dancers and explosive pyrotechnics—performed the new track as if it hadn’t just been released a few hours ago. (In point, she owned it.)

And even when she almost tripped, she managed to save herself — and slay.

And now, “Formation” just became even more empowering.

After literally slaying (“I slay, I slay“), Bey was joined by Mars for a brief but energetic hip-hop/soul/R&B medley (including Sugarhill Gang Apache, DLOW, and old school Bey featuring Jay Z) before the two along with Chris Martin launched back into “Uptown Funk.” Afterwards, Martin took to his piano to perform a massive mashup of “Speed of Sound,” “Fix You,” “Beautiful Day” (U2), “Purple Rain” (Prince), and “Independent Women” (Destiny’s Child), while a montage of 50 years of legendary halftime show performances played: Whitney, Michael, Bono, Paul, and more were all honored.
