Zayn Malik caused a stir among fans when he tweeted his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The One Direction member, 21, expressed his support for Palestine last night (July 27) amidst the current political turmoil stemming from the Gaza fray. In less than 24 hours, the tweet has been retweeted and favorited more than 170,000 times.

Though the retweets may suggest an outpouring of support from his fans, he has been equally ridiculed and even threatened by others, especially by those who sympathize with Israel. BBC and the Mirror both reported that the Brit has been receiving death threats, including tweets reading, “You always made me smile but now u make me cry!!” and “Zayn should say what we he said I mean if we’re such a terrorists like he said why wouldn’t we kill him for saying that huh @zaynmalik.”

Zayn isn’t the first celebrity to receive backlash over his views on the contentious topic. Rihanna recently tweeted "#FreePalestine" before deleting it shortly after, and NBA player Dwight Howard posted similarly before retracting his statement and claiming it was a mistake.

Zayn has stuck by his tweet so far and has yet to delete it, despite the violent responses.
