First, ‘American Idol’ contestant Curtis Finch Jr. – aka “CJ” or “Finchy,” as Nicki Minaj affectionately dubbed him – captured the judges’ hearts with his passionate, soulful rendition of ‘God Is Able.’ Then, he continued to blow them away with his standout performance of Bruno Mars’ ‘The Lazy Song’ during the Hollywood group round (Feb. 6). What’s the story behind this talented singer?

Finch Jr. is a 24-year-old St. Louis native who works as a tutor at a charter school. He’s remarkably poised and driven, with a charming personality to match.

“I believe I do have what it takes to be the next ‘American Idol’ this season,” he said with confidence prior to his audition. “I’m a hard worker, I believe in perfecting my craft and I believe in showing America that anything is possible no matter where you’re from and no matter what you’ve been through.”

If you enjoyed his delivery of ‘God Is Able’ during his recent 'Idol' audition, be sure to check out the videos below, one of which features Finch Jr. and the Shalom Church City of Peace Choir singing a powerful version of the same song.

He’s also a featured artist at STL Sounds, an organization that prides itself on “showcasing St. Louis talent to the world.” His artist page describes him as a “very accomplished and spirited gospel and classical singer. CJ has shared the stage with gospel greats such as Dottie Peoples, Donnie McClurkin and Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, to name a few. His classical training has led him to many awards as well as regional recognition. Determined to reach the hearts of many around the world; CJ is currently working on his debut album entitled ‘Experience CJ.’”

He has clearly impressed the ‘Idol’ panelists time and again with his powerful vocals and arresting stage presence. “Curtis, I’ve been waiting for you all day and you did not disappoint!” exclaimed Mariah Carey after his group performance.

“Music is a universal language, and since I possessed a small portion of music, I want to give my little piece back to the world. So that’s why I think I’m the next ‘American Idol,'” declared Finch Jr.
