LCD Soundsystem’s Gavin Russom Comes Out as Transgender Woman
LCD Soundsystem's Gavin Russom has come out as a transgender woman after a lifelong, internal battle surrounding gender identity.
In a new interview with Grindr's Into, Russom — who says she still identifies as Gavin, though that may change eventually — explains that it's only within the last year that she's finally been prepared to assume the role of her true self publicly.
“This is my fifth decade being alive,” she said. “And in each of those decades, there’s been a time where I’ve tried to say, ‘Hey, I think I’m transgender!’ This was even before that word existed.”
Russom says she's always felt somewhere "along the feminine spectrum," and that it was club culture that first helped her understand herself, and how trans people can live happy, healthy, artistic lives.
“It gives me hope for the future to see the courage and creativity of a much younger generation of trans women,” Russom said. “Clubs are where I’ve encountered a lot of that.”
And now that LCD Soundsystem are reuniting after disbanding in 2011, Russom says the group have offered her tremendous support, and that there's a feeling that this will only make them better.
“I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” Russom said, “But I have my good days and my bad days. On my bad days, it really sucks and I wait until I get home to go to the bathroom—which is such a basic thing.”
Still, she's up to the challenge.
“For people of transgender experience, walking out of the house in a way they feel comfortable is a revolutionary act," she said. "It’s resistance.”
