Like Alex Clare, the Lumineers got a big boost from a television commercial, but with its catchy tune and folksy appeal, ‘Ho Hey’ likely would have become a hit even without the added exposure. After all, as founding member Jeremiah Fraites says, “Great music is like a fungus; once it grows on you it’s hard to get it off.”

As ‘Ho Hey’ began rising up the charts, it took the band to places they never dreamed of, considering that their initial goal was simply to sell 5,000 albums so they didn’t have to keep a day job. The rootsy, Denver-based band is now one of the biggest names performing at Coachella in front of thousands of people.

Frontman Wesley Schultz says not experiencing overnight success has been a good thing: “If I had turned 21 and this happened, it would probably have been disastrous, because I was arrogant and over-confident. Getting knocked on my a-- a lot was helpful.”

Most recently, the Lumineers earned a second hit on the rock charts with ‘Stubborn Love.’ Catch the humble and appreciative group on Sunday at Coachella 2013.
