Hot Chip is an electronic act that often veers into a chiller, almost easy listening territory, as they do on ‘Look at Where We Are’ from their ‘In Our Heads’ album. Thankfully, Major Lazer fortified the track with a much-needed jolt of energy.

Major Lazer used the song’s slow tempo to their advantage, throwing down reggae beats over the intro before bringing synths into the picture. From there, the six-minute remix alternates between frenetic synth blasts and quieter sections accentuating the vocals of Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, who sings, “Look at where we are / Remember where we started out / Never gonna be without each other’s love again.

“We were thinking about great modern R&B like R. Kelly,” Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard told Billboard of the song’s original inspiration. “We tried to use the techniques you’d hear on proper slow jams.” ‘In Our Heads’ hit No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Albums Chart.

Major Lazer released ‘Look at Where We Are’ as one of four new tracks in Feb. 2013, as consolation for the fact that their ‘Free the Universe’ album had been delayed.
