Ne-Yo Helps ASCAP Celebrate 100 Years With ‘More Than the Stars’ – Song Premiere
Singer and songwriter Ne-Yo – aside from his own smash hits, he’s penned monster smashes for Beyonce and more — joins more than a dozen songwriters and composers for a 100th birthday song for ASCAP, the professional membership of those who write, compose and publish music.
The song is an anthem for creators of music and it’s premiering here on PopCrush, along with three of our sister sites.
Other acts that participate include country trio Lady Antebellum and singers Amy Grant and Bill Withers. The song was an unexpected surprise; it came together during the filming of ‘Why We Create Music,’ a doc that was commissioned by the organization to celebrate a century of success.
Of his participation, Ne-Yo said, “It’s really special for me to be a part of something that speaks so heavily to the art of songwriting and what it does to people…a kind of ‘We Are the World’ for songwriters. The song came out fantastic. The film came out fantastic. And I was happy to be a part of it.”
He’s not kidding. It really is like a ‘We Are the World,’ connecting voices from all genres, proving that music is indeed a universal language.
Each of the participants contributed something to the song — be it music, lyrics, vocals and/or instrumental elements. It is truly a collaborative musical patchwork.
Ne-Yo spoke more about the track here.
ASCAP’s official birthday is Feb. 13 of next year, but we’re helping them celebrate early by premiering the song.
The video was directed by Michael Marantz, who also directed the film, which is featured on the ASCAP site. An interactive timeline offers a visual walk down memory lane and celebrates 100 years of rich musical history.
