Filipino singer Charice Pempengco, who appeared as foreign exchange student Sunshine Corazon on Season 2 of 'Glee,' has come out of the closet and revealed that she is gay.

The singer confirmed her sexual orientation during a Sunday night (June 2) interview with 'The Buzz.' She told Filipino talk show host Boy Abunda, "Yes…I am," in her native Tagalog language when asked if she is a lesbian.

Charice explained why she chose to reveal her orientation in such a public forum, admitting, "I have deep gratitude for the Filipinos because they are the ones who know who I really am. I don't know what the problem is because for me, there is no problem with that."

She addressed the people who might be at odds with her sexuality, saying, "So now I ask for forgiveness from those who don't understand. And those who cannot accept. I apologize: I understand you."

It's interesting that she would be so supportive and open-minded of those who may not treat her with the same respect. But then again, she is being sensitive to a cultural divide where understanding may not be common and therefore she is making a brave choice to come out as a lesbian.

Charice also thanked those who will love her just the same and as she is, saying, "To those who could accept, and who could accept me, thank you very, very much. I just want to say to all of you that I feel very light – that I can leave the house knowing I am not hiding anything."

Above all, Charice, 21, said self-love was her rationale for coming out, saying, "I love myself, that's why I'm able to do this" through tears. Like Lady Gaga says, rejoice and love yourself today.
