Gavin DeGraw played an unplugged version of the Bruno Mars chart-topper 'Grenade' during a recent visit to VH1's studios in New York.

"I'm a little nervous to perform this one," DeGraw said before playing the tune before a live audience. He joked, "It's very brand new. I wrote it this morning." He claimed he had never performed the song before, which explained why he felt compelled to read the lyrics from a sheet of paper.

DeGraw sang passionately and brought new life to the familiar song, which Mars took to No. 1 last December. He even shook off the unwelcome ringing of someone's cell phone, joking, "Hold all my calls."

VH1 is promising to release more footage from DeGraw's visit in the coming days. DeGraw is promoting his new album 'Sweeter' and the single 'Not Over You.' In October, he'll be hitting the road with David Cook for a co-headlining tour.
