‘Shadowhunters’ Canceled by Freeform
Television network cancellations have struck again and this time, Shadowhunters has met its fate.
After three seasons, Freeform has decided to pull the plug on the show but will send it off with a special two-hour finale. “We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite,” the network said in a statement. “However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season."
The network went on to call themselves big supporters of the show and said they insisted on giving the series a proper ending. "But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending."
As for why the series is being canceled, Freeform's head of programming, Karey Burke, chalked it up to economic differences. "We went back and forth with them but ultimately we just couldn't make the economics work. We were very happy creatively with it."
While the first half of the third season of Shadowhunters wrapped up in May, a 12-episode second half will continue in spring 2019. "We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama," Freeform added. The supernatural drama originally premiered in 2016 and split its second season throughout 2017.
