'American Idiot' continues to live on. Despite recent news that the Broadway musical based on Green Day's hit song and album will be closing on April 24, Billboard reports that Universal has acquired the rights to take the project to the big screen.

Universal has tapped the musical's director, Michael Mayer, for the movie as well, while Oscar-winning 'Milk' writer Dustin Lance Black is in talks to pen the screenplay. Tom Hanks, who helped turn 'Mamma Mia' into a movie, is reportedly onboard to produce the project.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong began appearing in the musical full-time early in 2011, but after he left the cast in February, ticket sales declined. Armstrong is back in the musical for the closing performances.

'American Idiot' captured the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
