Kanye West embraced technology on his Auto-Tune-heavy album ‘808s & Heartbreak’ and its second video, ‘Heartless.’

The Hype Williams-directed clip was created in an unusual way using a technique called rotoscoping. West and the heartless girl he sang about were filmed normally, then artists traced over every frame and added new elements to the background, turning the video into something much more dynamic. The animation gave the story more of a distant, cold feeling, which mirrored West’s state of mind in the song.

Side note: Watch for the visual shout-out to one of the first families of animation, the Jetsons.
