Oops! Justin Timberlake May Go to Jail for Voting Booth Selfie
Justin Timberlake's recent attempt to encourage U.S. citizens to vote in the upcoming presidential election may actually land him in jail. Oops!
The “Can’t Stop The Feeling” singer posted a photo to Instagram yesterday (October 24) of himself voting early at a polling location in Memphis. He implored his followers to do the same, noting he took a plane from Los Angeles to Tennessee to cast his ballot.
"Hey! You! Yeah, YOU!” Timberlake wrote. "I just flew from LA to Memphis to #rockthevote !!! No excuses, my good people! There could be early voting in your town too. If not, November 8th! Choose to have a voice! If you don't, then we can't HEAR YOU! Get out and VOTE! #excerciseyourrighttovote."
It was, at first, a welcome gesture of encouragement, but it turns out it’s also illegal to take photos or record audio while in the voting booth, according to TMZ.
Timberlake could possibly face a 30-day jail sentence and be forced to pay a $50 fine, as per a Tennessee law that passed last year.
But while Timberlake's case is currently “under review,” according to a representative from the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, a member of the election’s board where he voted says the Trolls actor should not be punished for urging others to vote and should be commended instead.
