While SXSW is usually about emerging artists, every year a handful of big-name acts join the party. In 2013, that group includes Depeche Mode, John Fogerty, and one of our favorites, pop-punk hitmakers Green Day.

What brings the Billie Joe Armstrong-fronted trio to Austin? First, since Green Day's most recent tour was canceled when Armstrong went to rehab, the guys will use their March 15 set at the Moody Theater to tune up for their next arena tour, which launches on March 28.

But Green Day's bigger motivation may be that they have two documentaries screening at SXSW: ‘Broadway Idiot,’ a film about the stage adaptation of their 'American Idiot' album, and ‘¡Cuatro!,’ which offers a glimpse into the studio as the band recorded their '¡Uno!,’ ‘¡Dos!’ and ‘¡Tre!’ album trilogy.

Green Day have always been killer live performers, and seeing them play in a small venue by their standards (2,750 capacity) will be a treat.
