David Leathers Jr. Impresses ‘American Idol’ Judges, Admits He Once Topped Scotty McCreery
Season 11 of 'American Idol' began where season 10 ended, with a teenager from North Carolina. David Leathers Jr. not only impressed judges with his version of 21st Century's 'Remember the Rain,' he admitted to once beating Scotty McCreery in a talent contest.
The Fayetteville, N.C. singer drew comparisons to Michael Jackson before getting a golden ticket to Hollywood. "Dude, we love you man," judge Randy Jackson told the high school senior. Leathers took it all in with an easy grin; he definitely has the cool under pressure personality that McCreery showed last spring, although with considerably more fashion sense. His outfit -- crisp, white button-up with necktie and dark blue jeans -- gave one hope from the moment he appeared on screen.
Prior to singing for Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, Leathers told host Ryan Seacrest about a talent show he and McCreery competeted in together. In 2009, they were the last men standing.
"It was a tough competition, but I came out on top," Leathers admitted when pushed by Seacrest. They even captured home video footage from the competition. the 17-year-old is no doubt hoping he can be the third 'American Idol' winner from the state, including Fantasia Barrino in 2007.
