Asia O’Hara Is Real Sorry She Killed a Bunch of Butterflies on the ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’ Finale
Rupaul's Drag Race fans were gagged for all the wrong reasons on Thursday night's (June 28) Season 10 finale,
As part of the last hurrah, Rupaul explained that the four finalists would be split into two semi-final lip sync heats, and the winner from each would advance to an ultimate round that would yield the season's ultimate winner.
And, thanks to Season 9 winner Sasha Velour, who wowed audiences with iconic stunts (who could forget those rose petals?!), each queen clearly felt pressure to add a bunch of bells and whistles to her performance.
Enter: Asia O'Hara.
O'Hara, who won one lip sync during the regular season, squared off against Kameron Michaels, who came to be known as the season's elimination assassin. And while Michaels got off to an energetic start, O'Hara barely moved, and struggled to contend with two giant prosthetic breasts. Soon, it became apparent why.
In a butchered reveal, O'Hara tried to get butterflies to take flight off of two devices on her wrists. Welp, those failed. Then, she tore off her prostheses in what appeared to be an effort to release another flurry of butterflies. Welp, that failed too, and many crowd members seemed to be horrified by the sight of dead butterflies spilling out onto the floor.
O'Hara was eventually eliminated for her performance, and in its aftermath, she apologized for the stunt on Twitter.
“I would like to publicly offer the entire world my deepest apology. It’s important that everyone knows I would never purposely hurt any living being and have the utmost respect for all animals," O'Hara wrote. "Despite months of research and rehearsing with a professional company, what I hoped would be an amazing and safe display of optimism, and a surprise for everyone including production and the network, it did not go as planned."
Ultimately, the crown went to 21-year-old Aquaria from Brooklyn, but O'Hara certainly left her mark on the competition.
