Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello: The Shawn Mendes Collaboration Wasn’t a ‘Career Move’
Fans of Fifth Harmony — Harmonizers, that is — are well familiar with the rampant speculation online regarding the future of the group. Following a string of somewhat dicey interviews about their eventual disbandment last year, the girls assured us that they're coming harder than ever with 5H2, signing to new management and hitting the recording studio to work on their Reflection follow-up.
But when Camila Cabello popped up solo as a feature on Shawn Mendes' "I Know What You Did Last Summer," some fans worried that the move was the beginning of a shift toward solo-dom for the 5H singer.
Not so, says Camila.
In a new interview with Seventeen, which declares Fifth Harmony the Most Powerful Girl Group on the issue's cover, Cabello expressed her annoyance at the solo rumblings.
"It's very frustrating," she said regarding online backlash about the collaboration.
"It's been very difficult to watch people criticize me and my intentions. It's been sh--ty. They turned me [doing the song] into a conspiracy theory. We literally just wrote a song backstage, and it ended up becoming something awesome. It wasn't a career move that I carefully planned out."
And there you have it: The latest 5H break-up conspiracy theory dispelled.
