Beyonce may be the Queen Bey, but Jennifer Hudson is the dreamiest of 'Dream Girls.'

Hudson was born and raised in Chicago, where she began singing in her church choir at just 7 years old. Hudson went on to score a record deal with independent Chicago label Righteous Records in 2002, but was released from the five-year contract in 2004 so she could audition for Season 3 of 'American Idol.' Hudson came in seventh place, but came out on top in the end.

She went on to win an Academy Award for her role as Effie White in 'Dream Girls,' and released a slew of hit singles on her own without 'Idol' backing. Her acting career also continued to blossom with roles in the first 'Sex and the City' movie, 'The Secret Life of Bees' and 'Winnie,' based on Winnie Mandela.

Sadly, in 2008, Hudson experienced firsthand the tragedy that plagues certain areas of not just Chicago, but any major city, when her mother, brother and nephew were murdered at the hands of her sister's ex boyfriend. However, Hudson bounced back from the horrific event, singing her heart out at multiple high-profile gigs (including the Oscars, the Presidential Inauguration, the Super Bowl and more) and proving that she -- and her hometown -- are nothing if not strong, resilient and powerful.
