Here’s Justin Timberlake’s Latest Attempt at Staying Relevant
Just a few months after glomming on to the Pop-Co trend with country-inspired-but-not-actually-country album Man of the Woods, Justin Timberlake has returned to convince you he's still relevant.
His latest single, released on Tuesday (July 3), taps Drake cohorts Nineteen85 and James Fauntleroy for a tropical-tinged number called "SoulMate." It was recorded just last week in the Bahamas, and even though the internet has already collectively decided Cardi B's "I Like It" is this year's Song of Summer (except for Rolling Stone, who, sorry Selenators, is sorely misguided), apparently signals JT tossing his hat in the ring for the title.
"Summer starts now," he declares in the intro before detailing a steamy one night stand.
"I love your heartbeat givin' me rhythm / And I can feel your frequency, so unique / In other words, such a freak, set me free," he sings. "I wanna be your soulmate, for the night / Let me put my soul on you, it's only right / Let me pull you up out your body, into mine / Let me be your soulmate for the night."
Timberlake is currently on tour in support of Man of the Woods. He kicks off the European leg of the trek on Tuesday night in Paris. Listen to "SoulMate" below.
